Why doctors ask
for two cycles

If you tell a doctor you feel terrible before your period, many will first ask whether you have written it down. They are not doubting you. They are following the way PMDD is assessed.

That asks for daily notes across at least two cycles, written on the day and not remembered afterwards. Memory is unreliable here in a particular way: on a bad day everything looks like it has always been bad, and on a good day the bad week is hard to believe.

What the notes show

Two cycles of daily notes show whether symptoms rise after ovulation and fall when your period comes, and whether that happens more than once. One month could be a coincidence. Two is a pattern.

The form many doctors use

The best-studied daily chart is the Daily Record of Severity of Problems, or DRSP. Each day you rate a list of mood and body symptoms from mild to extreme, and how much they got in the way of work, family and friends. Doctors and researchers read two cycles of it side by side to see whether the symptoms rise before your period and ease after it starts.

Tideline does not fill in a DRSP. It keeps the same kind of record from one sentence a day: which symptoms you mentioned, how strong they sounded, how much the day was disrupted, and on which day of your cycle. If your doctor prefers the DRSP itself, ask for it before your appointment and bring both.

Making it survivable

Sixty days of record keeping sounds like a lot. It is one sentence a day. Missing a day does not ruin it. Writing something, even "fine today", matters more than writing it perfectly.

Keep the record your doctor needs. Tideline is a period and mood tracker for iPhone: write one sentence a day, and after two cycles it puts the week before your period next to the week after it starts. Free to track, no account.
